Short film research: Strange Beasts/ Science Fiction

Image
Welcome back! For my final short film research  I watched "Strange Beasts". This film had many elements of the previous films I researched but did have some different elements. For example, the lighting of this film was extremely different. The lighting was bright and natural. I preferred this lighting over the other dark lighting in the other films I researched. I thought that it went more well with the futuristic era and technology. Even though the storyline was creepy I thought it was nice contrast. The lighting suggests a cheerful atmosphere. I believe it makes the technology that is being advertised of like eye contacts where you can see virtual pets make it seem normalized and common. It made everything seem okay. But in reality it wasn’t. It wasn’t because the film showed the guy to have a daughter that wasn’t real. This gives the film a creepy twist. Angles the film included are medium close up, close up, long shot, and wide shot. These angles were used when the guy w...

Short film research: ANA / Science Fiction

Image
Welcome back! "Ana" is a science fiction film that I researched to find more info about the genre. I learned many different elements that the film used. The film depicts angles like over the shoulder shot, establishing shot, medium close up, tracking shot, and dutch angle. All these angles are used to show what’s happening to this guy working in a factory that makes cars. However instead of workers making the cars there are robots making the cars.In my previous research the same sound is used. Dialogue and non-diegetic sound is a common sound that I seen in this genre. Non diegetic sound is used to increase the intensity of the story and add more suspense to the mood. The lighting of the film is dim and cool. In one point of the film the lights are flickering to show that something wrong is happening that is being caused by the robots. The robots who tried to kill the worker and was watching him through the security camera footage. The setting is set in the same location but...

Short film research: Rise / Science Fiction

Image
Welcome back! I watched a short film with a genre of science fiction called "Rise." This short film is about robots and how there being targeted to be eliminated and destroyed by humans. The setting starts in a factory where a mass production of robots are being made. The lighting is dark and the atmosphere is intense. High angle shots and aerial angles are used to show the factory and the amount of robots in the factory. While this is happening a voice over is used to tell the story of the situation and giving background information. The voice over explains how the robots are being treated and how robots are developing human like emotions. The setting then moves to a warehouse setting where there’s a two shot. In the two shot is a robot and a guy who is wearing a military outfit. The editing then uses cross cutting to show the outside world of how more police man and military using weapons as props towards robots. It displays them trying to gather and eliminate the robots. B...

Short film research: A THOUSANDS SUNS - NEW SCIENCE FICTION SHORT FILM ANTHOLOGY RELEASED

Image
Welcome Back! In my short film research I decided to watch the short film "A Thousand Suns." Common Sound in this genre is non diegetic and dialogue. In the beginning, music played to start off the film. There is a guy who is talking to himself while traveling through the mountains. The setting was in different locations. The setting took place in the mountain, space, and the sky. The lighting is dark, foggy, misty , and cool. It gave a mysterious effect. I noticed the lighting matches well with the setting because the mountains are very blue from the snow and have that dark gloomy vibe. The actor used different props like backpack, futuristic technology, and wore a space suit. The film include a variety of different angles: zoom, wide shot, and  medium shot.A zoom was used to show the entrance of a space ship. The science fiction genre uses a lot of technology that haven’t been made. The editing it has was an eye line match up. When the guy was looking at something they show...

Research: How to make a short film

Image
Welcome Back! Im researching about the process of making a short film in order to prepare for making my short film. Through my research I learn valuable tips  and important elements needed. Understanding the resources you have available to you are important to take in account when writing your story. This way you’re able to work with the resources you have available and use them to incorporate in your writing. When writing don’t do your first instincts on how your story should unravel because the audience will expect that as well. Instead try to do the opposite on what you want to do so that way the audience is surprised by what you do. Knowing the tone of the film is essential because it correlates on how you will set up your location, camera angles, and wardrobe. So make sure everything is corresponding to create the intended tone. Having good sound is needed to capture and complete the work because it makes the work feel more organic. Neglecting the sound will be negative ...

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Welcome back! I’ll be comparing Le Jetee and 12 monkey in this blog. Both films are similar to each other even though the full length movie 12 monkey did not intend to make a remake of the short film Le Jetee. The film have similar themes that talk about time. The films explores the theme of time and the struggles of understanding time. Le Jetee tells the story through the use of photographs while in 12 monkey we follow a traditional movie that is based on the themes of the  photographs. Even though Le Jetee telled  only through photo’s it still effectively displayed the story without doing the traditional movie way. This helps me to envision more on what I will do on my short film project because it gives me a different approach on how to display my story then doing it the traditional way of how movies tell the story. I can focus more on the action of the character in my film rather than having a dialogue that explains the situation. This creates a more engaging a experi...

Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Image
In this blog, I’m doing research on the short and full length movie 9 by Shane Ackerman. I started off watching the short film first then I watched the full length movie. The short film 9 is about rag dolls that are in a city that have buildings that are ruined and are old. The atmosphere is dark and gives zombie apocalypse vibes. It just seems like the world had came to an end and there is only a few amount of life. The story shows a rag doll who is being chased by a creature who is dangerous. The person is dangerous because it killed someone and now it seems like they’re trying to kill the rag doll. The short film is extremely tense and sad. The main character seems really caring as he is doing his best to try and protect his friends. He seems to have troubles with his emotions and doesn’t know how he will handle them. However the main character 9 seems to feel more accomplished and have bravery towards the end. The special effects of the film I really liked because the main char...

Genre Decision Blog

Image
Hi everyone! My genre will be science fiction because my short film pitch involves the concept of time. The film will challenge the idea of natural time by exploring a scenario where time repeats itself. It focuses on a person’s experience with this unnatural phenomenon. I aim for my short film to raise questions about the universe and society, much like typical sci-fi movies do. This is why I believe the science fiction genre aligns best with my idea.

My Pitch

Image
Welcome Back! In today’s blog I am making pitches for my short film. Here are two pitches for my short film: Pitch A: A girl cleaning out her closet discovers a box that has not been there before and then hear a knock on the door. Pitch B: A person keeps relieving the same 5-minute morning. I loved both these pitches but I decided to go with Pitch B. I decided to this pitch because the idea appealed more to me. There are so many different ways I can portray this pitch and make it fun. I also already have a good idea on how I want to film and where the location I would film at. The storyline is very interesting and I think it will help me improve my filming and editing skills. I didn’t pick the other pitch because I didn’t have all the props needed to do this. I wasn’t also sure how I wanted the storyline to work. I didn’t know if the girl should open the box and if there should be something in the box. I  felt that it was too cliche and vague.Pitch B would be more engaging to watch...

Group Blog

Image
Hey everyone. Today blog is about who I'm going to be working with for my final task. I have the options of working individually or being in a group. I have came to a conclusion. My decision is that I have decided I'm going to be working alone. I decided to do this because last year in AS media I have already previously worked in groups. This year I want to try working by myself since I haven't done it before and want to try it out. I want to see how well I'll manage being able to take on so many responsibilities and how everything will turn out. I believe this will be the best option. I think I will do good because I work really well independently and I'm able to get my work done efficiently and productively. I'm not worried about it being it too much to handle because I regularly have heavy load of school work to manage that I will always get done. Additionally, I would do extracurriculars simultaneously. Working alone will allow me to create my own ideas and ...
