Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie
In this blog, I’m doing research on the short and full length movie 9 by Shane Ackerman. I started off watching the short film first then I watched the full length movie. The short film 9 is about rag dolls that are in a city that have buildings that are ruined and are old. The atmosphere is dark and gives zombie apocalypse vibes. It just seems like the world had came to an end and there is only a few amount of life. The story shows a rag doll who is being chased by a creature who is dangerous. The person is dangerous because it killed someone and now it seems like they’re trying to kill the rag doll. The short film is extremely tense and sad. The main character seems really caring as he is doing his best to try and protect his friends. He seems to have troubles with his emotions and doesn’t know how he will handle them. However the main character 9 seems to feel more accomplished and have bravery towards the end. The special effects of the film I really liked because the main character were rag dolls and looked to be made out of cloth and had stitching. The special effects on the rag doll like there cloth looked realistic and were detailed. The lighting of the film also really illustrated the situation they are and contributes to that dark and eerie feeling. The short film is definitely more summarized and leave out more details. It made me question more about the film then the full length film because there were some things not explained in the short length then compared to the full length. There was also less dialogue in the short film so the animation and the sound showed the story more.
The full length movie 9 has the same plots but the plot is explained so much more. I learned more about the character in this full length movie. I got to understand more about the character and why the character are the way there are from their back stories. The movie showed the purpose of each rag doll and shows how driven and determined the main character rag doll is. It did show this side of the rag doll in the short film but the full length really showed more of this side of him and how strong it is. Not only did I learn more about the main character I learn more about the other characters. It gave me a more different impression of the other character because I got to know more about them. It makes me see them different. For example, I discovered how the rag doll 1 is so different from the other rag dolls because he’s more scared and is scared to do thing that is not familiar. The setting of the full length is more detailed and is more less constricted then the short film. The full length shows more of the setting and the area they are in.The atmosphere also is different as there are brighter moments in the film but also dark moments. So based on the scene the light is always changing. This really helped add more to the story and portray the feelings and environment of the characters.
I liked the full length movie better because it made the story more complete. The full length really made it more enjoyable and more entertaining. I learned more about the world and characters then I did in the short film.Qualities in the short film that the full length did not have is the short story is it’s more mysterious and unexpected. It leave the audience wondering more about the plot because not everything is explained. The short story is straight to the point and doesn’t add any unnecessary details or scenes. It gives a clear view of what’s happening. But the full length is the opposite and has more details and takes longer to tell the plot.
